Life changes/Between jobs
Room to regroup.
Losing a job starts several clocks at once. We lay them out in order, so you file what you need to, keep your coverage, and have a steady plan for the search.
The checklist, in order
A preview of what we send. Members get each step as a reminder, timed to their dates.
- This weekFile for unemployment in your state. Benefits usually start from the week you file, not the week you lost the job.
- This weekAsk for your final pay details, unused vacation payout and any severance terms in writing.
- Within 60 daysDecide on health coverage. You have 60 days to elect COBRA, and losing coverage also opens a special enrollment period on the marketplace.
- First two weeksMake a bare-bones budget and call lenders early if a payment will be tight.
- OngoingSet a weekly search routine: applications, one networking reach-out, and one skill to sharpen.
- When you landUpdate unemployment right away so you don't owe anything back.
General information, not legal or financial advice. Rules vary by state, so check with the agency involved.
