Your first 30 days after a move

The address updates, safety checks and small wins that make a new place feel like home.

The truck is gone and the boxes are in. The next 30 days decide whether the move keeps dragging on or wraps up cleanly. Here's the order we'd tackle it.

Week one: safety and essentials

  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
  • Find the water shutoff and breaker panel.
  • Unpack the kitchen and one bathroom first. Everything else can wait.

Week two: the address list

Your mail forwarding catches most things, but not everything. Update your bank, employer, insurance and any subscriptions directly. Then do your driver's license and voter registration; many states set a deadline of 10 to 30 days after you move.

Weeks three and four: make it yours

Learn trash day, find the closest pharmacy and urgent care, and meet one neighbor. Small things, but they're what make a place feel like home.
