Laid off on Friday: what to do by Monday

Four things to handle this weekend, and what can wait until you've caught your breath.

6 min read

Losing a job is a shock, and you don't need to fix everything this weekend. But a few things have clocks running, so start there.

1. Get the details in writing

Ask for your final paycheck date, unused vacation payout, severance terms and the end date of your health coverage.

2. File for unemployment

In most states, benefits count from the week you file, so filing early matters. It usually takes about 30 minutes online.

3. Look at health coverage

You'll have 60 days to elect COBRA, and losing coverage also lets you enroll in a marketplace plan. Compare both before deciding.

4. Make a bare-bones budget

List what has to be paid this month and what can pause. If a payment will be tight, call the lender before it's late.

Everything else, from updating your resume to networking, can start Monday.
